1절
A black eagele has hovered over the city,
and he swore he would be victorious,
on every side, the crows are sneaking in
in the fields, and in the sunken paths.
But suddenly, the gallic rooster trumpets:
"Cocorico, arise little soldiers!
The sun is shining, the cannons are thundering everywhere,
young heroes, here comes the great battle!"
And Verdun, the victorious
utters a cry, carried over there,
by the echoes of the Meuse banks:
"Stop there! You're not coming through!
No more disdainfulness, no more arrogance,
flee you barbarians and lackeys,
this is the gate of France,
and you're not getting through, ever!"
2절
The enemies advance with rage,
like an enormous flood of a living ocean,
spreading death everywhere in its path,
drunk with noise, carnage and blood;
they will break through, when, raising his head,
an officer in an utmost effort,
although dying, will cry:
"To The bayonets, bold lads, arise! Arise, you dead!"
And Verdun, the victorious
utters a cry, carried over there,
by the echoes of the Meuse banks:
"Stop there! You're not coming through!
No more disdainfulness, no more arrogance,
flee you barbarians and lackeys,
this is the gate of France,
and you're not getting through, ever!"
3절
But our children, in a exalted burst,
have stood up; and soon the black eagle,
with rage in the heart, helpess in his crime,
saw his superme hope disappear.
The vile crows, in front on the French soul
fall bloodied, it's the last fight
while we sing the Marseillaise,
the assassines flee from the soldiers.
And Verdun, the victorious
utters a cry, carried over there,
by the echoes of the Meuse banks:
"Stop there! You're not coming through!
No more disdainfulness, no more arrogance,
flee you barbarians and lackeys,
this is the gate of France,
and you're not getting through, ever!"
